Why I Use Vivaldi

📕 603 words ⏳ 5 min.

I have spoken about web browsers in this blost on my blog, and I said that Vivaldi is my #1 browser choice and recommendation. I have been using it since they released the Beta for iOS which was back in May 2023, so just over three years now. And in that time, I have grown to absolutely love the browser and the community surrounding it. This blost is going to talk about a couple of the reasons why I use Vivaldi and a few of the great features that I have found to be extremely useful.

Why I Use Vivaldi?

I can’t remember exactly how I first heard about Vivaldi, I’m certain that it was through some social media at the time. I was hesitant to use it because it didn’t have an iOS version (at the time), which for me is a workflow breakdown. I am constantly flipping between my desktops, tablets and my phone. But, because I was very interested in what I saw, I signed up to hear more updates about the in progress iOS version, and once the first Beta was released on TestFlight, I downloaded it and was using it as my daily driver browser, alongside the desktop version on my laptops.

The biggest reason is that it is a privacy focused browser, and has a beautiful UI to go with it. Yes, it uses Chromium as a base, but I have, for a long time, preferred Chromium over anything else. Vivaldi builds a unique interface on top of Chromium and has a lot of features that aren’t there in base Chromium. Everything that Vivaldi does is privacy oriented, and is always things that user want to see.

Of course, a browser swiss army knife, like what Vivaldi has become, may not be for everyone, but there is no reason why you can’t just disable the features that you don’t need or want. I see the amount of settings in Vivaldi as similar to KDE Plasma, full of everything that you could ever need and more.

The Features I Use Most

Sync

The biggest feature I use it Sync. I am often jumping around between sites on my phone, tablet and laptop and being able to just sync bookmarks, open tabs, history between all my devices has been extremely helpful.

It’s a common misconception that Sync is a backup solution, it’s not, it’s a tool to help users keep information shared between devices. There are some instances where data is completely whiped on the server because of a technical error on the server or because a new device is synced with no data and it overwrites existing sync data.

Bookmarks

Every good browser has the feature to save bookmarks. Some call it favourites, I like the idea of bookmarks. I use bookmarks as a way to save things for later. It takes up storage and I often forget about them, but they are there for when I want to refer back to them.

The Community

I know this is not a feature of the browser, but it does fit in the wider sense of the browser.

Vivaldi has a large community, centered on it’s forum. They also have a lot of cool little software offerings; stuff like, a Mastodon instance, a Wordpress instance, and now a Radio app.

Within the forum, the level of help, from community members and Vivaldi Team members, is absolutely amazing.

And for all those reasons, I use Vivaldi, and will do for the foreseeable future. I volunteered as a Vivaldi Ambassador to spread the word about Vivaldi.
